Dell Networking | 25GbE võrgutehnoloogia on uus 10GbE

Dell EMC on võrgunduse maailmas tõusev täht ning viimaste aastatega muutnud tempokalt Gartneri tabelis andmekeskuste võrgulahenduste positsiooni. Kui 2014. a. oli Dell nišimängijate sektoris siis 2018. aasta lõpuks paiknes ta innovaatori sektoris suunaga turuliidrite sektorisse - 4 aastaga ülikiire areng! Selle põhjusteks on nii avatud standardite toega lahendused (Open Networking) kui ka uute tehnoloogiastandardite jõuline turuletoomine ning nende kasutuselevõtmine. Sellest räägibki käesolev jutt.

Dell EMC is a rising star in the networking world and has quickly changed their position in Gartner Magic Quadrant in the past few years. When in niche players in 2014 they have re-positioned in Visionaries by end of 2018 and heading strongly to Market Leader playground. There are several reasons for that, mainly open networking support and bringing to market new technology standards while being in the forefront for adopting them. These solutions and trends will be discussed in details here.

The article will take about 24 minutes to read and will shed light on the following recent big Dell EMC Networking announcements.

25G is the new 10G, and growing 10x faster.

  • 100G and 25G will compose nearly 60% of data center switching ports by 2019 by Dell'Oro Data Centre Forecast in 2018. 
  • 10G market took 20 quarters to ship 500,000 cumulative ports. 25GbE achieved same milestone in just 2Q. Huge increase in number of ports being deployed in a very short time.
     

Why is the 25G growth faster than 10G?

The reason for that is decline in 10G being replaced by 25G as the new standard for DC interconnect. For strategic services some customers might keep the current 10G since it's working and they don't want to touch it but for some new solution they'll go with 14G servers and also 25G network.

40G was previously adopted since at the time 100G was too expensive, costing 100,000 USD per port whereas now we've seen 100G come down to almost commodity pricing. Dell has 32x 100G ports in a single 1U switch now , so it's a lot more accessible for customers. For those with existing 40G infrastructure, the new 100G switches have 40G optics that can be used in the 100G ports for interconnecting and so making possible to move ahead without rip & replace for the whole datacenter but instead upgrade step by step.

From Dell point of view 25GbE is the new 10GbE and is available already since 2018 with the S5048 and S5148 switches. 25GbE is also default standard for new modular MX blades within chassis and interconnect between many chassises. In rack servers S5200 series just recently launched. 

Looking how networks are evolving, customers are deploying multiple 100G switches in the core and 25G being used between the core and distribution layer, sometimes not even using the traditional 3 tier model but going with just 2 tier spine-leaf architecture.  

25G is 2.5x throughput rate than 10G but not at 2.5x cost. For only about 10-15% more customers can upgrade to 25G networking now without having the constraints 10G will give in 2 to 3 years time where suddenly the fabric may become overloaded or at maximum capacity and not having to make a decision whether to go from 10G to 25G or directly to 100G. So going to 25G now gives customers more breathing space and more capacity for applications and higher demand with the 100G links available when needed.
 

Dell EMC Open Networking vision and strategy.

Is to disrupt the fundamental economics of networkig through open, standards-based technology disaggregation, addressing the gamut of environments from hyperconverged to hyperscale. What this really means is we don't want to tie customers into a dell EMC solution they then feel is not flexible for the future, doesnt meet their needs in near future for quickly evolving business applications. For that reason we use standard silicon, standards in connectivity and in software - absolutely nothing proprietary - and able to connect with other vendors solutions with standard protocols. We want to give customers choice in  networking, just like server virtualization does for x86 platform

With that choice, customers can decide which OS they want to use - Dell original OS6 that has been used and developed over 10 years; or use OS10 that is Linux based enterprise grade environment or other platforms available. 

25G NICs already available for servers and also in converged solutions like VxRail vSAN appliance. Dedicated optics and cabling is also available in the 25G space.

For customers with multiple datacenters for risk management, with products such as S4200 we can provide high-speed interconnect over fibre or rented 10G service. Specifically, S4248FB has a large buffer and S4248FBL with large buffer and extended tables. Large buffers are ideal where there is lots of traffic and large packet sizes (maybe video or multimedia frames, large data sets, etc) and the S4200 switches can buffer up to 60x more than traditional 10G switch. S4248FBL with extended tables can handle up to 2 billion IPv4 routes, ideal for ISPs. 

Next-generation access, the new Virtual Edge Platform (VEP) was launched in Q3 2018. Initially a bare metal offering for telecom operators and service providers to be used with their own applications. 4600 available with additional modules and memory cards, VP4400 for smaller environments as well. A lot of customers moving away from the traditional MPLS circuits and deploying multiple VPN connections via multiple service providers to connect the branch to the core. 
 

Fabric Design Centre for correct and easy network design planning.

Fabric Design Center is cloud based web application to let customers, partners and Dell EMC employees to design and build datacenter fabric environment using Dell solutions. The tool allows to plan and deploy fabric in the datacenter by answering a set of requirement questions that is then translated into validated network designs, wiring diagrams and even bill of materials. There is also option for "What If" scenarios for future growth planning. For example, let's say from today the server ports will increase by 50% in next 2 years with new application coming. This can be built in the "what-if" scenario and you can see in details what the whole environment will look like and also exact bill of materials when the project ends in 2 years. As a result, customer can see what is needed today and what will be needed in coming phases.

For deployment automation, FDC can then generate ASCII configuration files that can be loaded on the switches directly or via Zero-touch provisioning. Also supports Ansible playbooks that are automatically generatef for network design, these can be downloaded and integrated in customer DevOps environment to deploy and manage switches. So in summary, it is not a Dell application but standard-based application that can be integrated and used in existing management environments.


 

S5200 PRODUCT FAMILY NEW RELEASES - New 25G switches that rock with VMware NSX

Latest 25/100G ToR open networking switches that help to move from current default 10G to new 25G connectivity. As Dell'Oro forecasted 60% market share for 25GbE by end of 2019, new technology is adopted more quickly.

New 3 switches are low cost ToR switches based on Broadcom Trident3 and offer enhanced buffering, higher forwarding tables and data plane support for VXLAN Routing. Multiple options of 25GbE SFP28 ports for in-rack server and storage connections with 100G uplink.
 

  1. S5248F-ON - 48x 25GbE ports and 8 x 100GbE ports. 
    Technical note: QSFP28 is the standard 25G connection, QSFP-DD is new non-proprietary industry standard for 200G connection but holds 2x 100G logical connections. QSFP-DD is also used in the MX modular solution between multiple chassises.
  2. S5296F-ON - 96 x 25GbE ports and 8 x 100GbE ports
  3. S5232F-ON  - 32 x 100GbE.

That combination gives better granular security with microsegmentation for individual workload, automation for faster network provisioning and higher efficiency; workload mobility independent of physical network layout.


 

VELOCLOUD NSX SD-WAN EDGE SOLUTION - a cloud-based SD-WAN solution delivered in 4 minutes.

IDC has said that digital transformation will be the most significant driver of SD-WAN growth over the next five years.
