  • Build it yourself (BIY) vs Appliance approach and why it matters from management and business perspective
  • How VMware vSAN and VxRail works "in the belly of the beast"
  • Cloud options

45 mins each, once per 2 weeks, technical topics, physical hardware excersises, no marketing, no PowerPoint slides :)

All webinars will be recorded and shared.

Currently proposed agenda per webinar (first two are whiteboards, the rest - physical lab excersises from Lab):

  1. HCI - what is it, how to compare to classic architecture, VxRail. 01.08.2019, video recording link >>
  2. VMware vSAN - how it works, data protection, failures, high availability
  3. VxRail initialisation, management, monitoring
  4. vSAN storage policies
  5. VxRail hardware expansion, firmware/software update
  6. Disaster recovery = active/active, active/passive

vSAN background

VMware vSAN is the leading SDS (software-defined storage) platform by far. vSAN reached 20,000 customers with 41% market share worldwide. In the most recent quarter, Q1 2019, VMware vSAN led the market in share based on systems running HCI software, an astounding 66.3% growth. During the quarter, the overall market grew at an impressive 46.7% rate, but vSAN blew past that—growing more than 40% faster than the market.

Through that growth, vSAN captured additional market share and continues to lead the HCI market with 41.1% share. This market share is composed of vSAN sold on ReadyNode servers, jointly certified servers by VMware ReadyLabs and the OEM server partner, and Dell EMC VxRail, a jointly-engineered, turnkey HCI appliance.

Customers say it's the "Best Hyperconverged Infrastructure" and Gartner named vSAN Customer Choice 2019

Forrester has positioned VMware as a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Hyperconverged Infrastructure, Q3 2018, and VMware received the highest score in the strategy category. Report link >

It competes in the race with Nutanix and HPE Simplivity and while all of these architectures are different, VMware and Dell's VxRail appliance wins with native VMware vSphere operations and unbelievable ease of use. Main purpose of VxRail with vSAN integrated, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution is to improve business agility while managing complexity, cost, and risk.
